Design and Calculations

From concept to completion, PSESL can provide a full architectural and structural design service to other Architects and Contractors and to prospective clients who approach us directly.

Loft Conversions

If an existing roof space can be converted into a habitable room, which will be determined on site visit, a fully detailed drawing will be produced indicating layout of supporting structural members.

PSESL has extensive experience in the design of various loft layouts. A dormer is normally recommended the size of which will be dependent on the 'Permitted Development' guidelines (see FAQ) and whether the property is in a conservation area.

The details of the loft conversion are presented on two drawings, the first is a General Arrangement showing existing details and what is proposed, and the second drawing gives details of the steel and timber members with steelwork connection details to enable a contractor to construct the dormer. A schedule of all structural members and detailed calculations accompany the plans for approval of Building Control.

Garage Conversions

Where there is a good sized frontage to accommodate a car parking space, a garage conversion to provide a habitable room may be possible. Such conversions currently require planning permission. PSESL will advise the client on the feasibility of this proposal at the time of the survey.

Domestic Extensions

When designing extensions to a domestic property, one of the most important aspects is to increase natural lighting to both the extension and the original building. PSESL will give advice on this subject after a detailed survey of the property has been completed.
